In the few years since I have been away from the Choir, I have been exposed to programs that volunteer to help kids in need and ones that foster musical talents, but none that do both. The Honor Choir has taken two seemingly unrelated ideas and crafted a compatibility between them that is particularly impactful. The Honor Choir emphasizes empathy, allowing them to learn how to be role models for their peers and uniquely recognize when someone needs help. Raising awareness for child abuse sometimes feels uncomfortable, especially for young people, but The Honor Choir does it in a way that is appropriate and allows members to have a role in combating the pain experienced by some children through their partnership with the Children’s Advocacy Center. The incredible part of this process is that it is done by fostering the member’s musical talent so they can be an uplifting and inspirational factor in difficult circumstances. The Choir’s staple song “We Sing for the Children” encompasses the beauty of having kids standing up for other kids and supporting them with their touching songs and voices.

It is no exaggeration that The Honor Choir meaningfully impacts the lives of both its members and its community and uses its musical talents to foster empathy and hope in everyone it encounters. They are incredibly deserving of support in reaching their current goals because they will undoubtedly shine in a way you would have never expected. I was beyond lucky to be a part of this organization and it has truly inspired me to carry their depth of empathy in everything I do. I know they will continue to be a wonderful voice in their community and are worth investing whatever time and resources you may have to support their uniquely powerful mission.

These young people certainly put their hearts into both making music and serving the Children’s Advocacy Center and other groups in town. You could not ask for a better group of young people, or a better director in Bill Owens, all of whom are tirelessly serving the Bastrop community.

The Honor Choir continues to be a shining example of what can be accomplished in young people by combining good character and hard work. Over these many years you have developed the positive traits of leadership and community in these youth, all the while honing their voices to sing meaningful lyrics. Bastrop and Bastrop County can be proud of what the Honor Choir is and does. Thank you for bringing out the best in these kids

The Honor Choir provides a beautifully powerful voice to help raise awareness around the needs of children in our community who have been traumatized through abuse, or are at risk of abuse or neglect. Choir members serve as informal ambassadors for the needs of children, both in their role as choir members, and individually in their daily lives at school and in the community. The Honor Choir has been nurturing compassion and empathy in its members for years, and in doing so, has touched the heart and soul of this community.

This is such a wonderful group under the amazing tutelage of Bill Owens. All of the kids in this choir through the years have not only made a difference in the lives of others, but their own lives have been changed by their experiences.

The fact that we were able to impact the lives of other kids like us in a positive way through both voice and song and bring awareness to the issue of child abuse by reaching out to communities both locally and across the world amazes me still.” The Honor Choir has changed my perspective because, as someone who’s grown up in a loving home, child abuse likely wouldn’t have been an issue I would be aware of if it weren’t for the choir to remind me. [The Honor Choir] allowed me to grow confidence in my abilities, and I gained some experience as a leader. I would like to thank The Honor Choir for what they do and for being such a positive influence on my life.

Mr. Owens gives so much time and attention to helping the youth grow in their understanding of character, and understand how to be a voice for their peers who might not be able to use their voice. What my daughter learned will impact the rest of her life, and now as a teacher, she will continue to share her knowledge with all the students she comes in contact with for years to come. My daughter also had many great opportunities and experiences that she would have otherwise never experienced. Her first time traveling was with the choir and it sparked a love that continues to this day. She also met and developed relationships with community leaders, composers, and other musicians. She gained confidence in her ability to speak publicly.” As the older choir members graduate and I watch a new generation of youth start their journey with The Honor Choir, it brings such a Joy to my heart. Knowing the impact that Mr. Owens and being part of The Honor Choir will have in their lives.
